On September 6, my family and I were playing a card game at the dinner table, ready for Hurricane Irma. Or so we thought. The power went out around 7 in the morning, so we had flashlights scattered around the house. We had just started a new game when the rain poured down. My dad went upstairs to make sure all of the windows were closed. A few minutes later, my mom ran up to see why my dad was taking so long. Even though the windows were shut all the way, water was gushing in. My dad was trying to find towels to shove under the windows to stop the water from coming in. My sister and I checked all the windows downstairs, and there was water coming in from all of them. It was even coming through the doors. Once all of them were blocked, we used up all of the towels.
All of the rooms in my house have large windows. Whenever the wind violently blew, the doors would shake and it would seem like the glass in the windows were going to fly out. The only things I could do were look for leaks and read Archie comics. Many trees around my house were falling every few minutes. A large palm tree right next to my mom’s room was about to fall. I watched as it fell, afraid it was going to trap my parents upstairs. Thankfully, it fell into the road. For the majority of the hurricane, my whole family, excluding me, was upstairs. My mom has a balcony attached to her bedroom, but there is no railing. It is cement because the balcony leads straight to the roof. Water filled the balcony. The water came into the room. My sister and mom were trying to scoop the water out, while my dad was using clothes to block the cracks in the door.
At the end of the hurricane, water got into our wooden floor and small part of the wall outside got chipped off. We lost fans and blinds that were kept outside. I am thankful that we did not get it any worse. Our power came back before Thanksgiving, and most things are back to normal now.
