Hurricane Hugo was one of the strongest hurricanes in South Carolina's history, and was at the time the most costly hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean. Hugo's destruction wasn't limited to just South Carolina; Hugo also devastated the Caribbean Islands of Guadeloupe, St. Croix, St Thomas, and Puerto Rico. In all, Hurricane Hugo was responsible for at least 86 fatalities and caused at least $8 to $10 billion in damage. Twenty years later, residents of the Piedmont of North Carolina still remember the devastation of Hugo and will never again believe that their inland communities are immune to hurricanes. Twenty-five years ago around midnight on September 22, Hurricane Hugo made landfall just north of Charleston, South Carolina at Sullivan's Island as a Category 4 storm with estimated maximum winds of 135-140 mph. In conclusion this Hurricane was recorded as one of the top 10 most destructive hurricanes in the Caribbean.
